Akim is above all else about visually perceiving and visually expressing himself. With his works he explores the interplay of analog and digital technologies through intuitive abstract visualizations of his experience of the world. This playground, free of form and of the demand for function, is his interpretation of freedom, brought to life by the power of individual perceptions of each viewer.

Thoughts from artist Akim Sämmer on his piece

How would you describe your practice?

Practically speaking, I let the computer do the work by using effects for other purposes. I find out what comes out of it, and combine the results until I think the image is ready.

What was the inspiration behind this piece?

My inspiration is the same for each piece, and I never know until it is finished what will come out of it. What drives me is the curiosity of what will happen next and how I will react to it, and the interest in what others see in the shapes and colors. I deliberately keep all the images very abstract because the individual interpretations of different people always surprise and inspire me.

What do you believe is the role of art and the artist?

Interpreting and reproducing impressions.

What about Neon Door led you to submit?

I like the idea of a virtual gallery, I liked the works on display, and I found the web design appealing and inspiring.

How do you see your work evolving?

If I had the possibilities and the means, I would expand my art from the screen into VR and AR, as well as into spatial installations with light and haptic impressions, with the goal of merging both virtual and analog possibilities of perception.
