Neon Door is the first truly immersive literary exhibit. The name is derived from the founder’s favorite childhood manga Doraemon, in which exists a pink door that allows you to travel anywhere instantaneously simply by stepping across its threshold, from your bedroom to the classroom, or from the closet to outer space, as long as you are able to imagine the other side. At Neon Door, we believe in art’s power to open doors, manifest worlds, transport and transcend.

TESTIMONIALS

"With the internet reinvisioned as a place for division and secession it may be difficult to have much faith in its latest burgeoning iteration—web 3.0, the metaverse, whatever you want to call it, whatever it's going to be. However, Hark: an oasis of the possible in a desert of coercive delusion. Stepping through the Neon Door immersive literary exhibition reminds the reader/ explorer/ creator of art's timeless ability to craft space for expression, contemplation, and play. Again, actual possibility. These are fertile virtual grounds, I believe. A step in two directions at once: towards those forgotten original promises of the early internet and total terra incognita. Welcome to the future of literature, which I hope is also the future of the internet."

Adam Soto

Author of This Weightless World

"There's something deeply meditative and warm upon entering Neon Door. The sound design, color, and imagery bring me to a safe and curious place of my childhood. I became immediately present. I've allowed myself the time to explore and realized I had wandered my whole morning within its many doors discovering exciting new artists. I know I will be back from time to time for the connection and the art."

Eythan Maidhof

Cinematographer

“A beautiful, intimate, multi-sensory experience. Neon Door’s innovative approach to literature is truly inspired.”

Stacy Testa

Literary agent at Writers House

"An impossible-to-define hybrid journal/exhibition space representing a real avant-garde. A place, space, and platform, Neon Door understands—as Socrates did—that virtue and knowledge begets wealth, not the other way around."

At Neon Door, there is no editor-in-chief. We empower our editors to know their worth.

In traditional publishing, there is often a hierarchy of editors. When a piece gets chosen by one editor, it usually moves on to the editorial board, and the editor-in-chief makes the final call. More often than not, the piece won’t make it to the final stage. Neon Door is a team of working artists, writers, mothers, and professionals who have all been through this brutal process in finding homes for our own work. We know how hard it is to find just one editor who connects with a piece, let alone having to convince an entire team. We do not pretend to have unanimous taste. In fact, our team works because we are all so different from each other. Our editors in their genres have complete autonomy over what to accept/reject. In that sense, we are a truly collaborative team. At Neon Door, there is no editor-in-chief.

We want to empower our editors for many reasons, one of which is that this project would not be possible without them. For each exhibit, editors are allotted a set amount to offer and commission artists, starting with $25 for an image, $50 for a poem, and $75 for prose. However, the offer may be more due to a variety of factors, including experience, the amount of submissions we receive for a particular exhibit, etc. As much as we want to empower our editors, we also want to encourage artists to know their worth—you may make a counter offer. We cannot promise that we’ll accept it, but we may, and you should try. As writers and artists ourselves, we have had to learn to advocate for our work, and we want to empower you to do so. We look forward to reading your work!
